Experiments with digital lino print animation

Making experiments for the collaborative project Here I have made a very simple model of a bird with a simple rig which can be shaded as a silhouette. I can use this to create a black and white mask which I could use to create a 2D silhouette animation in any style including cutout. This is the lino-esque animation I created using my rigged bird made in blender. This is a test to see if I can make a 3D object look 2D, if I can make rigged animation in blender appear low frame rate and hand made and if I can emulate different styles of 2D animation. I used a looping photoshop animation of random voids in the print by using a speckled brush, I made a looping animation of several pages from a sketchbook for the background. As the print voids and the bird animation were all black and white masks I only needed to change blending modes in premiere in order to composite everything. The animation was keyframed in blender at 12fps with automatic tweening, I then inserted holds into the tweened motion.

here I used a rough model of a bird I made and I used randomized displacement to make the edges more inconsistent to better match the effect of printing

a quick test done without the random displacement technique, which looks too clean in my view

An animation of some mushrooms I made for a short film, using all the techniques born from these bird tests
